FORGIVENESS

Where souls long forgotten, clashed at the Bloody Bridge

below the slopes of Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh,

in sight of the glorious heights of Binnian and Bearnagh,

we rode sure-footed ponies over the rocks and against the wind.

Below the slopes of Slieve Donard and Slieve Commedagh,

at first light of morning, beside the ancient Mourne Wall,

we rode sure-footed ponies across the rocks and against the wind

and shivered when we heard whispers. Did they know us then?

At first light of morning, beside the ancient Mourne Wall,

we heard voices of ancestors of our own grandsires,

and shivered when we heard whispers. Did they know us then?

Did we win or lose that battle? Did we ever forgive?

We heard voices of ancestors of our own grandsires,

as we passed that place where blood was shed, we wondered,

did we win or lose that battle? Did we ever forgive,

where souls long forgotten, clashed at the Bloody Bridge?
